ITU (International Telecommunication Union), the “United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies”, published a report Digital signage: the right information in all the right places in which SMIL is viewed as a key standard for the digital signage industry.
The whitepaper quotes the A-SMIL.ORG website saying:
[SMIL] is increasingly supported by leading digital signage solution providers.
The report also refers to several standardization bodies of which IAdea plays active roles, including POPAI and the Open Digital Signage group. The report recognizes that for digital signage to be “open”, the following are required:
- It supports deployment of platform-independent contents and applications.
- It allows the public to easily purchase time and schedule contents on it.
- It is built from components that comply with a common standard and can be expanded or replaced without limitation.
The full report is available openly from the ITU web site at the link provided above for download.
